The Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple, Datong, Shanxi, 2 Days

 

Day 1: Beijing---Datong   370 kilometers (L)
Transferred by private air-conditioned vehicle to Datong. Arrive at Datong at noon and enjoy a traditional Chinese lunch. This afternoon we visit the Yungang Grottoes and Nine Dragon Wall.

Have a lunch at local restaurant.

Yungang Grottoes, located 16 km west of Datong, are masterpieces of Chinese Buddhist cave art. Being regarded as one of the three famed Buddhist sculptural sites of China.. It extends one kilometer from west to east. Nine Dragon Wall, also known as Nine Dragon Screen, is a glazed screen wall with reliefs of nine dragons. In ancient times, such walls were placed at the gate for Chinese fengshui reason and to avoid passers-by peeping into the yard.

                

Day 2: Datong---Beijing   370 kilometers  (B/L)
Depart early this morning to see the Hanging Temple which is one hour’s drive from Datong city and Wooden Pagoda in Yingxian County.
The Hanging Temple is at the foot of Hengshan Mountain in Hunyuan County, 65 km from Datong. The temple is an architectural wonder as it’s actually standing on a sheer precipice 70 meters above the ground. In the temple, the statues of Shakyamuni, Confucius and Lao-tzu are worshipped together. It’s very unique in China that the Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian elements are combined in one temple.

Have a late lunch at local restaurant.
Drive back to Beijing and drop back at China National Convention Center at approximately 9 pm.
